Musicanship Skillsfrom the Music Educators website.

The audience, as well as the musicians, are participants in every concert. When you participate in listening to the music, you will be taking an important part by sharing this experience with others in the audience and with the musicians on stage. Formal concerts are much different from rock concerts or sporting events, and require you to know some specific concert manners. In order to make a concert enjoyable for everyone, here are some tips to remember:

It may take years to excel at the piano but the vital mental "map" you
create to make sense of what you hear when your fingers hit a key,
forms almost as soon as you start to train, a new study suggests.

Music Is BasicMusic is the manifestation of the human spirit, similar to language. Its greatest practitioners have conveyed to mankind things not possible to say in any other language. If we do not want these things to remain dead treasures, we must do our utmost to make the greatest possible number of people understand their idiom.

    Zoltán Kodály

Recently a number of reports have appeared that attest to the connection between music and academic achievement. In a study of the ability of fourteen year-old science students in seventeen countries, the top three countries were Hungary, the Netherl ands, and Japan. All three include music throughout the curriculum from kindergarten through high school. In the 1960's, the Kodály system of music education was instituted in the schools of Hungary as a result of the outstanding academic achievement of children in its “singing schools.” Today, there are no third graders who cannot sing on pitch and sing beautifully. In addition, the academic achievement of Hungarian students, especially in math and science, continues to be outstanding. The Netherla nds began their music program in 1968, and Japan followed suit by learning from the experience of these other countries.

Buying a band instrument Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

    Band News

I recommend you purchase a band instrument from a stateside company rather than a local German store. You will find the price from a stateside mail order company to be about 50% of the price on the local economy. I also recommend you NOT purchase a band instrument from J.C. Penney or from the AAFES catalog. The instruments they sale are off-brand instruments of a VERY low caliber.

Please call me or email me if you are considering an instrument and I will make a recommendation about an instrument to purchase. Here are several online companies where I have ordered instruments. You will get a name brand instrument at a good price from these companies:
